Textile Industry Round Up (20/1/14 to 25/1/14)

In Surat approx 150 units of Textile and Chemical has shut the units due to shortage of Gas supply from Gujarat Gas. Such shut down has affected livelihood of around 40,000 workers because the entire chain of distribution has been affected. Notice was sent to units on 14th Jan, enlightening about industrial gas supply cut from 21st Jan to 31st Jan due to supply shortage in international market. Officials from Gujarat Gas said that there is shortage of Gas supply from international market due to winter, and also supply has been diverted to Europe and US. They added that it’s not possible to stop supply to residents so they had to supplying to textile and chemical units.

Labour Union of Pondicherry Textile Mills has requested the government to set up Textile Park in the UnionTerritory. AITUC (All India Trade Union Congress)-affiliated union adopted a resolution to this effect as its meeting held on Sunday. According to this meeting three textile mills- Swadeshi Mills, AFT Mills and Bharathi Mills could be used for Textile Park and that will provide job to 10,000 women. Representative of the Union has requested government to buy clothes for uniform and hospital bed sheets from the mills.

Recent news said that Textile Ministry has put a proposal to Government for increasing the duty draw back rate by 5%. Government is expecting that in the fiscal year 2014-2015, export of textile would be around $60 billion, rise of 30% compared to current year. Government said it’s not difficult with the improvement if we focus on skill development in the country.

For the current week industry is doing well, no major changes have been found as per demand and supply in this industry is concern.
